The Alpine Ibex (or steinbock, boquetin, or simply ibex) is a type of wild goat that lives in the mountains of the European Alps. The males have large curved horns they use primarily to battle other bucks for access to females.
They can grow to a height of 101cm (40″) at the whithers, & are up to 171cm (67″) in length, with a weight of up to 117kg (258lb). Their horns can grow up to 98cm (39″) in length.
The Ibex is strictly herbivorous feeds mainly on grasses. It is also an incredible climber & can sometimes be spotted climbing up & down almost sheer cliffs where they also forage for mosses, flowers, shoots, or twigs.
This behaviour also contributes to its low rate of predation, & they typically die of old age, disease, or starvation.
However, conservational efforts & protection from poaching & hunting since the early 1900s have earned it the IUCN status of Least Concern, & it now boasts a number of around 30,000.
