The Tasmanian Devil is the largest carnivorous marsupial known to exist. Once a natural native of the Australian mainland, it was hunted into extinction and then found only on the island state of Tasmania.
In 1941 they became protected, but the devils are now facing a new threat in the form of seemingly contagious facial tumours which is decimating wild populations & earned them an Endangered classification.
Conservation initiatives are ongoing and it is hoped that one day the healthy stock currently being bred in captivity will one day allow these amazing creatures to roam the wilderness again without fear of predation or interference from humans, and free from disease.
