  • The Rufous-Necked Hornbill.
This distinctive bird, distributed mainly along Northeastern India, Bhutan & Southeast Asia, boasts a rich orange-red (rufous) plumage around it’s neck, head, & underparts, & bright blue colouring around the eyes, with glossy dark green elsewhere.
The beaks appear broken but is normal, and mature birds also sport black ridges along the upper beak.
.
They feed mostly on large fruits, seeds & berries, but do also hunt small mammals, rodents, & insects to supplement their diet during the mating season, or when the opportunity arises.
.
These beautiful birds have been hunted almost to extinction for their feathers and beaks, which are used ritualistically. As a result only around 10,000 individuals remain in the wild, but is considered completely extinct in Nepal.
.
It is however and fortunately currently classified as a protected species in India, China, Thailand and Bhutan, and is now officially listed as Vulnerable, to Near-Threatened after an increase in numbers due to on-going conservation efforts.

  • The Canada Jay, grey/gray jay, or whisky jack is a passerine bird of the family Corvidae, and is the national bird of Canada. It is found year-round in the coniferous northern forests of North America.
.
This bird has pale grey underparts, darker grey upperparts and a grey-white head with a darker grey nape.
Canada Jays typically mate at about 2 years of age, breeding young cooperatively, and subsequently forming monogamous pair bonds. They are however often joined by one or two of their offspring from the previous season, forming small families.
.
They are omnivorous and often hunt the nestlings of other birds, but also feed on small mammals, amphibians, insects, as well as carrion, fungi, mold, berries and seeds. They are known to hide or cache food stocks around the forest during summer, returning to them in winter or when food is scarce.
.
They are currently classified as Least Concern with stable populations over large swathes of northern forests, but they are predated upon by owls, hawks, fishers, marten, and red squirrels for their eggs and/or young.

  • Christmas White Boomers, or “Xmas Derperoos” as I like to call these two.
.
I wanted to illustrate something that uniquely represented an Australian Christmas, & since it’s much too hot here for reindeers during summer, I learned that Santa hitches white boomers up to his sleigh (slang for large muscly kangaroos, not old Caucasian people 😜) & dons a tank top & board shorts, & drinks tinnies while he flies around downunder.
.
I wasn’t really sure if I wanted to share this one but I guess it’s a good example of what happens when I try to force out an illustration. It comes out looking kinda funny & derpy. 🤪

My last desktop tablet was a Wacom Graphire3 and I had a blast with it until I gave it away.

  • It's that time of the year again; the good ol' Aussie Magpie has been nesting and saying 'Hello' to their neighbours in their own special way... by swooping the ever-living crap out of anything that moves nearby! 😂
.
The Australian Magpie; an icon of the Australian landscape whose warbling song can often be heard during early morning or evenings.
.
Magpies can grow up to 43cm (17") with a wingspan of up to 85cm (33") and can weigh up to 350g (12oz). They are mainly characterised by their black plumage with white patches, beady brown eyes, sharp clawed feet, & wedge-shaped beaks which they can use to terrifyingly great effect when protecting their nesting area.
A monogamous species, they nest from August & to October, and will aggressively protect their nesting territory by swooping trespassers, sometimes quite viciously.
This is purely an instinctive response, evolved in the species over the ages, and this behaviour quickly subsides once the chicks leave the nest.
.
They are omnivorous and will eat anything from small animals (frogs, lizards, mice, etc.), to small insects, as well as nuts, fruit, berries, tubers, seeds, and any food remains left by humans.
.
They are Least Concern species, as they are not immediately endangered or threatened. However, the magpie's nesting habits make it a ready and easy target for humans.
It is very important to know that these birds are generally protected under Australia law and it is illegal to kill or harm the birds or their chicks, or tamper with their eggs. Molesting the birds and their immediate habitat in any way can result in heavy fines and possible jail time.
.
If you do come across a particularly contentious bird, it's best to contact your local council or wildlife organization.
MagpieAlert.com has also been set up specifically to monitor and advise the public of any potential hot-spots around your area.

  • It's that time of the year again; the good ol' Aussie Magpie has been nesting and saying 'Hello' to their neighbours in their own special way... by swooping the ever-living crap out of anything that moves nearby! 😂

  • The Philippine Eagle, the national bird of the Philippines, also known as the monkey-eating eagle, or great Philippine eagle, is a critically endangered bird species, endemic to the forests of the Philippines.
.
It sports an orange-brown & white-coloured plumage, and a shaggy crest. It measures up to 102cm (3.35ft) in length, and weights up to 8.6kg (17.6lb).
It is considered one of the largest of all living eagles in terms of length & wing surface.
.
These birds are opportunistic feeders & will eat whatever prey they find, but actively hunt flying-lemurs, monkeys, birds, flying foxes, giant cloud-rats, snakes, and lizards.
.
This magnificent bird faces an uncertain fate, as a result of mass deforestation leading to the loss of its habitat, It's also vulnerable to pollution, pesticides, and poaching despite its protected status.
It is listed as Critically Endangered with an estimated 600 surviving specimens left in the wild as of 2015.
