Hey peeps. Just wanted to share my latest Copic marker illustration with you. This time around I was moved to capture a Puma mother & her adorable cub! 😍
Pumas—also known as mountain lions, cougars, & panthers—are such fascinating creatures; they’re the fourth heaviest cat species in the world, & their powerful legs enable them to leap up to 12m (40’) in one bound! Talk about impressive! 😮
Pumas are also quite adaptable creatures, able to thrive in a variety of habitats, from deserts to rainforests to mountains. Unfortunately, they are classified as a Near Threatened species due to habitat loss, fragmentation, as well as hunting & poaching. It’s so important that we do what we can to protect these beautiful animals & their habitats. 🙏
Pumas are also great swimmers. They can swim up to almost 30kph (18mph) & are even known to hunt fish & other aquatic prey! And while they’re typically solitary animals, pumas have been known to form groups to share meals or mate.
Speaking of meals, pumas are carnivores & will eat just about anything they can catch, from deer to raccoons to even porcupines! They’re also ambush predators, sneaking up on their prey before delivering a quick & deadly bite to the neck.
One of my favourite things about pumas is how they care for their young. Puma mothers are incredibly protective of their cubs, teaching them important hunting & survival skills before they strike out on their own. Seeing a mother & her cub together is a real joy.
I had a blast creating this piece & I hope it inspires you to learn more about these incredible creatures & how we can help protect them.
